Michael Schmidt, MD, is a fellowship-trained pain medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist at Southern Pain and Spine in Athens, Georgia. Dr. Schmidt is dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to individuals living with chronic pain, musculoskeletal injuries, and complex spine conditions.
Dr. Schmidt earned his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. He went on to complete a Transitional Year Internship at Las Palmas Del Sol Medical Center, followed by a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he developed a strong foundation in diagnosing and treating neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders.
To further specialize his training, Dr. Schmidt completed a Pain Medicine fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine, where he gained advanced experience in interventional procedures such as epidural steroid injections, facet joint interventions, spinal cord stimulation, and radiofrequency ablation. He remains committed to staying at the forefront of pain-management innovation and evidence-based therapies.
At Southern Pain and Spine, Dr. Schmidt works closely with each patient to develop individualized treatment plans focused on restoring mobility, reducing pain, and improving overall quality of life. He treats a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, degenerative disc disease, neuropathic pain, and chronic back and neck pain, using a combination of minimally invasive procedures and comprehensive, multidisciplinary approaches.
